There's a spiritual connection as well. Jesus uses water to represent Himself—living water that never runs dry.
John 4:13–14 says:
“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
If Jesus uses water as a symbol of Himself, you know it must be powerful. And that has certainly been my experience. I witnessed the power of water in a dramatic way during my mother’s battle with cancer.
She was diagnosed with a severe form of cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy, which—being poisonous—made her terribly sick. Getting her to eat or drink anything was nearly impossible. I felt so helpless watching her suffer.
Fortunately, my grandmother is a force of nature. She came to stay with us during that difficult season, and while I struggled to get Mom to take even a sip of water, Grandma simply wouldn’t take no for an answer.
She pleaded, she nagged, she commanded. She never let up. Through sheer willpower and persistence, she persuaded (more like forced) my mom to drink nearly a gallon of water every single day. It was no small task—but there’s no stopping Grandma on a mission!
That hated water jug saved her life. I’m sure of it. The second round of chemo was brutal, but my mother made it through and started to perk up. The doctors call it “killer chemo”—and I believe them. It’s powerful enough to kill cancer, but it nearly killed her, too.
But praise God—plentiful water helped flush the chemo toxins safely out of her system, allowing her body to slowly recover. My grandmother’s persistence paid off, and we saw firsthand how something as simple as water made a huge difference.
By God’s will and Grandma’s determination, my mother has been cancer-free now for more than twenty years.
So why not take a tip from my grandma? Drinking water isn’t just something to check off your to-do list—it’s essential for your health.
Water improves digestion, boosts energy, keeps your skin looking youthful, and helps regulate body temperature. It supports kidney function and helps your body flush out harmful toxins—whether from chemotherapy or mosquito spray.
So if you’re feeling sluggish or just looking for a simple way to stay healthy, grab that water bottle and drink up. Imagine Grandma standing behind you. She could make sure you couldn’t—er, I mean wouldn’t—forget!
